Exterior Closet DIY & Room Tour

Have you ever reached a point in your life where you just want to simplify? Well, that's where I'm at right now! Just like my Reinventing My Style blog post, I've interwoven that mindset into my design aesthetic. I've always had soooo many interests in life, from many different "worlds" and I've always had a hard time honing in on one idea/vibe. So when it came to decorating my room, I would display all my decor interests at once and in hindsight, everything was a bit cluttered. So, I have finally honed in on the idea of: simplicity. I love farmhouse, mid-century modern, with a touch of vintage. But with those 3 style interests, I was able to cohesively combine them, all while maintaining a simple style appeal.

After decluttering and rearranging, it made all the difference! Now it's so cozy, welcoming, and gives off a light and airy vibe. However, I did add something that I've always dreamed of having in my room...an exterior closet! All it took was a $19 (in-store) black iron closet rod and $3 wooden closet rod sockets from Home Depot. For less than $25, it not only made more room for clothes, it completely changed the look of my room! I'm so excited to share with you this simple DIY that can be done in minutes!

To keep with the theme of my room, I opted to showcase clothes that complemented the space. I chose more of an orangy/neutral color scheme with pops of shine! When I pick out my outfits, I feel like I can "shop" my own clothes and it makes me giddy every time!

This whole idea came to mind at around 6 AM one morning because I just couldn't fall asleep! I was staring at my armoire and small section of my outside hanging clothes and thought to myself, "It would be so awesome to showcase even more of my clothes on the outside." This not only allowed more hang up space, but also became a new design element. By choosing a set color scheme of clothes, it turned into a creative space and acted as decor. That's my favorite part!

All you need is:
$19 (in-store) black iron (or color of your choice) closet rod from Home Depot
$3 wooden closet rod sockets from Home Depot
Your favorite clothes to showcase
Optional
Velvet hangers for a clean look, allow more hang up room (TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Home Goods, etc.)

I absolutely love the juxaposition of the wood and iron! One of my new fav design styles!

Because I had my armoire already, I was able to install the rod against that and the wall. I initially thought I wanted to move my armoire to the middle of the wall and have two sides of clothes, but I liked how it balanced out only having one side. I do however; have a previously installed small hangup section on the other side.

Once you decide where you would like to install your exterior closet, whether that be wall to wall or against a furniture piece and the wall, you level everything out, put in the screws, and insert the closet rod. Then it's time for the super fun part...picking out the clothes and displaying them! Whoo hoo! I'm not ashamed to say I was really excited to organize/design it! 😂

My smaller exterior closet section. This is where I display some of my more colorful pieces.

I hope you enjoyed this simple DIY project and getting a look into my bedroom space.
